I keep thinking about how from all of the Dead Three' Chosen, Gortash is the only one offering an alliance, and why is that.
It stirs from their goals, I believe.
Orin's ultimate goal is Bhaal's goal, i.e. the destruction of the world.
What is Ketheric's ultimate goal I know not, but I suspect his ultimate goal has been achieved already - Isobel is alive, and now all what's left for him is to serve Myrkul for the miracle of bringing his daughter back.
Gortash's goal is world domination. And, as we could see in Control the Elder Brain ending, world domination is a...lonely thing.
In the end there is no one but you and your army of thralls. No one to see you shine, no one to bask in your glory.
And if there's no one to see you rule, then are you even ruling?
I think of Jaheira's comment about what "of course Gortash is genuine, he needs someone to bask in his glory".
And this is why he ultimately seeks an alliance with Tav/Durge, this is why he specifically requires his ally to be his equal.
Because, maybe subconsciously, but he knows what the power he seeks is a lonely business. And he wants, no, needs someone to witness his greatness, someone he can share it with, someone who could GET it.
He genuinely plans to share his rule and power with another person because he needs someone - equal to him - to see and acknowledge his success. That's why, ironically, he can be a legit ally if your actions and goals do not contradict his.
This is why it's "our tyranny".
And that's so fucking sad.
#something something power is loneliness#ultimate power doubly so#something something gortash if doesn't know then at least suspects it#he needs an equal by his side#this is why he doesn't try to take the stones from you without genuinely trying to make this 'working together' thing real#this is why his coronation is practically a showing off to durge (esp durge) or tav#witness me see my glory#i am emotional about this rat ass of a tyrant#lord enver gortash#enver gortash#bg3 spoilers#baldurs gate 3

this is very in-text but i love that zoro gets attuned to kiku from the get-go not only because of this sword wielder code that he's followed through all extremes of the practice, from brook to kin'emon -- recognizing and respecting all masters -- but because her existence is the solid evidence, the living proof that kuina was wrong
#zokiku#in the sense that if he squints long enough and whips his head to a certain angle super fast for a fraction of a second he can see his best#friend towering over him and being the most badass samurai ever#also zoro has only seen kuina in 3 other ppl but that's a post for another day#i'm at onigashima and like he's never cared about someone that isn't a strawhat this much since johnny and yozaku#who mind you are his FRIENDS meaning zoro sees her as a friend an equal and a force to be reckoned with#op log#zoro#roronoa zoro#how could i forget to add him to the tags when most of my watching experience is prodding into that seaweed head of his w some tweezers#last but not least#op okiku#okiku#i adore her#something something gender is a performance and kiku wears both the armor and the kimono#last 2 cents on this i swear and hopefully i'm not transgressing into spoiler territory too much but when kiku is in danger like big i need#help danger he uses wado and wado only to come by her side#which could mean nothing#but it's still a beautiful way to tie it all back to kuina and his mourning process

when ppl see this & this, directed by the same person, and think the narrative is "anakin is evil" not "anakin is a steward of the balance, a force demi god, as was foretold on Mortis" 😂

So, today my husband said, "Some people think Shanks is a radial leftist, but I think he's the most centrist character in the show. Dragon fills the role of the radial leftist/anarchist that people often attribute to Shanks."
And, huh, yeah. People do often talk about Shanks like he's an anarchist, but he's really not. I've always said that Shanks is a mediator, keeping a tentative peace between the pirate tribes and the government until the time comes wherein the One Piece can be claimed and the mysterious consequences can happen, but that means he is effectively playing the part of a centrist—straddling the fence, as it were. The key difference, I think, is that Shanks knows for certain that change is coming in the form of a rubber deity, and he is trying to guide it into place. All his work is done behind the scenes with very little violence if he can help it.
Now, it's easy to assume that Shanks' plans involve the complete dissolution of the government as it presently stands; that he is simply using his power & influence to mitigate harm for the many until the "real fight" can begin (and, with him having recently decided to chase the One Piece, now it has), but that might not be the case (and, even if it is the case, a lot of centrists use "mitigating harm for the many" as a reason not to take action against some truly heinous acts). The reality may be that Shanks doesn't see the need for the total collapse of the government, or perhaps he knows something about it that we don't (i.e. because he might be of Celestial Dragon blood). I don't really believe this is the case because, as far as I'm aware, Shanks hasn't ever shown any real support for the World Gov but he has shown, time and time again, that he believes in dreams, in people's personal willpower, and in the ability of anyone to become strong and change the future. But the truth is that we can't know his intentions for certain without Oda giving us more information, so my husband's assertion that Shanks is a centrist makes some sense.
In particular, Luffy is what makes this theory interesting: slap him in between Dragon and Shanks, and there's a very real dichotomy between the two "fathers" in his life. See, Luffy idolises Shanks and thinks of him similarly to a father, but he might realise as time goes on that he can't be like Shanks; he might realise that Shanks' ideals will only carry him so far. After all, what good is it to be a pacifistic when your enemy is a powerful government that is comfortable with mass murder?
(My rebuttal is that Luffy is the only one who can be like Shanks. He is effectively Shanks' dream: Shanks wants to be strong enough to do all the work himself, to suffer all the pain himself, and while he is one of the strongest men in the world, he simply can't do that; what he can do is only achievable through the support he has at his side. Meanwhile, Luffy has close support in his crew, and he has the Gum-Gum Fruit! He can literally become a godlike figure and shape the world around him! He can do everything that Shanks wants and needs and, as sure as I am that Shanks wishes he could have done it himself—I'm thinking back to his days with Roger here—he knows that it was never meant to be him.)
This is where Dragon comes in. Dragon, in direct contrast to Shanks, uses violence as a tool whenever he can. He's all about the greater good, for lack of a better term. His thinking is along the lines of, "People are suffering now and we can help, and we have no qualms in forcibly dismantling a government that uses slavery, genocide, and imprisonment to control its populace. We don't wait for the right time to act, we simply act." Do I think Shanks would approve of Dragon's goals? Yes. Do I think he would approve of Dragon's means in achieving those goals? No, but mostly because Shanks is very self-sacrificial and tries to take whatever suffering is necessary for change onto himself, relying only on his small, personal crew, whereas Dragon is happy to let other people martyr themselves for the rebel cause. He lets a small, amnesiac child join them, for crying out loud—something Shanks would never do, not even if the child proved very capable.
If anything is to come from this difference of ideals, I think it's that Luffy will learn from both of them and find his own way to the One Piece and into the world waiting beyond. Why? Well, because Luffy is all about freedom, and no one on the side of Dragon or Shanks is truly free. As for the world itself, it's hard to predict what will happen after Luffy's done with it because it's pretty dependent on Oda's philosophy. For instance, Oda seems to approve of monarchies, which is not something I would personally imagine remaining in a world without a governing body—but, hey, what do I know?
Of course, we all know that the true centrist in the show is undeniably Garp. He will let real, undeniable harm befall those he cares about in order to maintain the status quo, or to stop the government from toppling because [gasp] that would be the worst thing ever! He's a man who believes the government is essential and joins up in order to change it from the inside, only to fall short of his own expectations because he won't stand up when it matters most. Not even for the sake of his beloved grandson.
#i haven't put these thoughts together in the best way but i just needed to get them OUT THERE#bearing in mind that neither myself or my husband are completely caught up in OP#we're on Whole Cake Island#but YES i still believe luffy will turn down being the pirate king for one reason or another leaving buggy to claim the crown#because let's face it: buggy has tripped into power roles so many times#and he was “overlooked” for the role of king (mostly because of his own self-worth issues/being intimidated by shanks' sheer potential)#so it would make sense for him to become king! that's his dream: recognition as he finally stands side-by-side with shanks. equals at last#(and yes i do believe that buggy looks up at shanks so much that he would need to get ABOVE shanks in stature to finally see them as equals#or something like that#anyway.... this was a long one.#(guess who's ADHD prescription finally got filled!? the med shortages are killing me. my brain is happy when i have my meds.)#somehow this became a “fuck you garp” post lol#i love garp tho#one piece#one piece meta#shanks#monkey d. luffy#monkey d. garp#monkey d. dragon#also shanks & pride is a super interesting combo that i must explore one day#shanks doesn't have a fruit—none of his crew do. neither did any of roger's crew. there's gotta be a reason for it#but what if—what if that reason was simply pride?#(that would make him a good match for mihawk)

Momo confirmed: there can never be a Banri-centric three:vale
And actually, his logic behind this is really interesting. Because at it's heart, the difference is that with Banri, Momo could never have formed the same sort of codependent relationship that he does with Yuki. Banri is capable of taking charge and taking care of himself, and so Momo wouldn't feel the need to step forward and try to help him.
Hell, it's only after he realizes that no one's taking care of Yuki that he reaches out to him in the first place. Momo establishes very well in Re:member that he needs to feel needed and useful to feel loved, or to express his love, and Yuki lets him do that in spades. Banri, though. Banri doesn't need someone to dote on him (or at least so judges Momo) and therefore Momo's acts of service (his declarations of love) are unwarranted at best and unnoticed at worst.
Whether or not this is actually true is a whole separate question. Banri does seem to rely on Momo when he's helping them out backstage (Momo valiantly kills the dreaded spider for him) -- but he does it in a moderate sort of way, taking the time to make sure Momo's not overexerting himself (ie, when he's lugging around more equipment in one trip than he probably ought to be) and that he is generally taking care of himself as much as he's taking care of others.
But Momo seems to want someone who relies on him too heavily. He needs to devote himself fully and completely to another person (perhaps because he feels he can no longer fully devote himself to his own dreams, so he seeks some other outlet, someone else's dream to latch onto to replace that). He gets drawn in by Yuki's sopping wet meow meow nature and the fact that Yuki so clearly needs someone to take care of him, because Yuki is the only one who enables him to express his love in the way he wants to. Needs to, perhaps. Regardless of how (un)healthy that expression and the resulting relationship is.
That's why MomoBan won't work with just each other. That's why they need Yuki to draw them together: Momo needs someone who he can devote his everything to, and Banri can never be that person for him.
#I forgot he says this#I was looking for this panel earlier when I was gathering examples of their assigned sides but I forgot he just. says it openly like this#it is really interesting that we never really get to see Ban's impression of Momo tho#obviously everything we see of their early relationship in re:member is heavily colored by it being in Momo's POV#so we see Ban as Momo sees ban : cool. collected. suave and hunky. and most of all independent#bug killing aside -- which sort of teases the idea that maybe if it weren't for yuki Momo might be able to see more of how#Banri COULD fulfill that need for him to be useful to someone#but he's so besotted with Yuki (even before he realizes it)#(because despite his claims that he likes them both equally it's pretty clear here that he's already picked his favorite)#but he's so besotted with Yuki that Ban's needy moments don't even register to him#maybe if everything had been different#and Yuki had never been in the picture#the two of them could have meshed well together#But as it stands Yuki fulfills everything Momo wants in a partner - someone to devote himself fully. who always needs him and relies on him#someone who can give him purpose and direction -- not by guiding him but by needing guidance#man I really need to learn to not dump whole paragraphs of analysis in the tags huh#idolish7#i7#re:vale#yukito orikasa#momose sunohara#banri ogami

so all of Peter’s actions towards Neal in s5, especially at the end of the first episode, were Not Okay, but I think it was really fucked up how Peter used the “we’re your family” card ESPECIALLY after the whole thing with Neal’s dad. Like you confide in this guy “yeah i consider you more of a family to me than my own flesh and blood” and then he uses it against you to tell you that you’re just a criminal and oh, btw, you’re getting an entirely new handler who you don’t even know! And Peter does it all under the justification of “protecting” Neal. Not cool!
I get the complexities of the situation but I feel like people are too lenient on Peter bc the show likes to make him out as the good/right one (the copaganda is showing)
#white collar#neal caffrey#peter burke#peter burke critical#I’m gonna be real I disliked Peter more and more the series went on#like okay. yes. it’s meant to be a complicated relationship and complicated morals and all that#but damn peter your cop is showing#they never really resolved all the stuff between them in s5 but I think that Neal’s decision at the end of s6 was the best ending for him#he would just keep getting screwed over by the fbi#and Peter used to be by his side but got so caught up in the moral quandary of being out prison on false evidence that he screws over neal#yeah. peter made me so mad in s5#s5 left very deep scars in their relationship#maybe they can mend it in the future when they’re on equal terms but yeah#I understand the complexities of the situation I know that Neal was not entirely in the right either but I will judge Peter for his actions#I still like Peter as a character and I would love to study his moral rigidity though#this has just been like brewing in my head since I watched the show and I need to get it out

2024 reads / storygraph
At The Feet Of The Sun
book 2 in a slow paced high fantasy duology*
the right hand of the emperor (who is off searching for an heir) struggles with what to do after passing on his responsibilities and also discovering various pieces of information that are mindblowing to him, personally,
after adventure is thrust upon him, he travels to find His Radiancy and they go on some otherworldly adventures while growing closer and figuring out the nature of their friendship
(*there’s extra novellas & i think another book coming? duology adjacent, currently,)
#At The Feet Of The Sun#lays of the heart-fire#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#giggling and kicking my feet. and also crying#bro the yearning….the yearning#I can definitely see why this loses people - it’s so long and very self indulgent#(listen. i enjoy it a lot . but does it need to be THAT long (i just checked. 375k? lord))#but it is easy to read and also very funny. it felt less repetitive than the first book to me#I did find it hard to keep track of some of the side characters though#The first world-travelling stuff caught me off guard initially - I feel like all the weird magic was more background in book 1?#or maybe I just didn't pay attention.#taking a step back it is a bit like - kip sure does achieve everything and then some and just continues to achieve everything huh#and it gets to a point where it's like.....okay yes I get he's so talented at this etc etc.#but I guess it’s a nice change of pace from the kingly swordfighting fantasy protagonist who’s perfect and wins everything -#someone whose skill is people and negotiation in a humble way is a bit more interesting. still. it maybe felt less grounded after a while?#the deep exploration of platonic yearning and desire for strong friendship and fear over that person just wanting romance/sex#when that’s Not what you want out of the relationship………#not to mention his complex feelings over meeting two people who were like his platonic soulmate rolemodels#and then finding out they just used that term because gay relationships weren’t accepted and trying to not be disappointed#(because gay is also good!) but also like. so lonely in feeling like nobody understands his desire for a platonic soulmate#to be treated equally as romantic relationships are. oof#I am a little baffled to see people interpret it as a romantic asexual relationship?#I feel like that does such a disservice to the . everything that has been set up in what 600k words of books#like the implication of that is that you think other romantic rships w/o sex are unheard of in this world. I find that hard to believe idk#(I mean - a bit romantic on fitzroy’s end; and in the nebulous queerplatonic area between friendship and romance; sure#but like a straight up romantic relationship just without sex - I don’t understand how it could be interpreted that way lol?)#(anyway other people’s interpretations don’t matter)#I do have questions about the telepathic dinosaur soulmates. you can’t just mention that and now show me them#also. kip being like 'wait there were sirens? i wonder if i can hire them' kshfkjsgkf#asexual books

Also there're so many reasons why durge might want to deny Bhaal, aside from general "killing is bad, the god of murder is bad."
Orin betrayed them and it was somewhat from silent approval of Bhaal, so "god betrayed me first" kind of narrative. A desire to get revenge, on Orin AND on Bhaal.
A desire to live. Durge's fate, Durge's Destiny is to literally kill everyone and then themselves. What if they want to live? What if desire to live is stronger than desire to kill?
Alternatively, what if there's someone they don't want to kill? A single person for Durge to care about, a single person they would want to save instead of bloodying father's altar with their blood. A single connection like that is all what it would take.
A desire to break free. Durge can be completely okay with murders, loving murdering people even, reveling in violence. But they're their father's puppet and they could want to break free of it, to have their own will, to have only their voice in their head. To be a master of themselves with no one to kneel to.
The "I'm better than my father" kind of mindset. Durge is made of a flesh of a god, in a sense they ARE god. Bhaal was mortal once. Why would Durge listen to him when they can attempt to overthrow him, to become a new god?
Being compelled to other side. It's not unknown for gods to steal each other's followers/chosen ones. Look at Ketheric, look at Shadowheart. Myrkul is recently chosen-less after the Moonrise Towers. Bane would love to fuck with Bhaal like that. Shar is there. Good gods who would try to redeem Durge or use them against their own father are there. It would be a delightful power move from Selune to offer Durge assistance/ an alliance against Bhaal.
Idk, I just love how multidimensional the defiance of Bhaal can be. I have a lil army of Durges exactly because I can mold them into such different people
#bg3 spoilers#dark urge#the dark urge#bg3 durge#durge#like june is compelled to the other side (selune) while also wanting to live. the desire to live is his main fuel#levi thinks bhaal betrayed him alongside orin AND he believes himself to be equal to bhaal so why would he need his father#when HE can be a god of his own?#also he refused to kill gortash when his father ordered.#ONE person. Why couldn't he have ONE person for himself? He was such a good son#A perfect obedient murder incarnate#He just wanted ONE man for himself#He didn't give a fuck what it was a banite. It was HIS banite. They WORKED together.#Father said Gortash is useful when they just met he said levi should use him#why it's suddenly 'kill bane's chosen'???#the answer is because levi started to care for gortash way too much for bhaal's liking. bhaal doesn't like when it's not about him it seems

Friede, Amethio and Zeiyu..
#love how my man effortlessly and randomly gets on their nerves <3#friede was so cute this ep though.. the way he actually wanted to play and enjoy the festival in his own way#he was soo cute.. even at the end he was still willing to take on zeiyu's challenge#because he wanted to have fun too! it's just that he needed to look for briar#i actually have thoughts about friede's competitive spirit. but can't exactly articulate them right now#something something about how friede is usually the responsible leader and carries a Lot in terms of things and people to protect#but he likes battles too and i think he wanted to channel his competitive spirit somewhere. something he can't exactly do with the rvt#which is why imo he was happy to have found a rival in amethio. because he gets to show that side of him with someone#amethio is as important to friede as friede is to him. because friede gets to be competitive with him in a battle setting with an equal.#something that he can't do anywhere else.#anyway. i should get around to writing more on their rivalry someday#i think the setting is a bit similar with zeiyu.#it feels like friede gets competitive around people he genuinely likes.#i feel like he values people who are straightforward and honest?#and both amethio and zeiyu are open about challenging others etc..#friede probably doesn't respect(? for lack of better word) fake people (like spinel lmao)#anyway. it's all interesting stuff#and in the end it comes off as teens beefing with friede and him accidentally provoking them and i think that's hilarious#hz069#friede#zeiyu#character notes#episode notes

I just want to gently remind people that if Herlock Sholmes WAS pretending to get all of his deductions wrong to train Ryunosuke, you have to accept the fact that he was willing to let 5 people get blown up by an active bomb so he could have someone tell him it's not an anti-gravity device.
#great ace attorney#herlock Sholmes#and also that he was willing to frame ryunosuke - an innocent man#for the death of someone he knew not to be dead#its okay that sholmes is a little stupid#like. there's a reason theyre called a DANCE of deduction#its bc both sides need the other person to find the true story#ryunosuke couldnt do it on his own!#as he says sholmes has a talent for cutting to the raw direct heart of the matter#he just. struggles a little with the details.#but either way#you need to accept either that sholmes is a little stupid and he and ryu's relationship is one of equals#or that sholmes is actually quite a bad person who is willing to play with the lives of others for abstract goals

Actually mak3s me sick how sam & dean BOTH need each other. How sam clings to dean just the same, how he lost his mind when he lost dean and it happened over and over. How even in stupid poorly written late seasons mary, THEIR DAMN MOTHER, tells sam to get some rest and face the reality of losing dean, how much sam got to watch dean die over and over and over and how a comedy episode like Mystery Spot was actually the most honest insight into sam's nightmare of losing dean and how sam himself has his own mind confront him with "you'd do anything to cling to that doomed brother of yours". I don't think there's any part of sam that didnt want to be permanently attached to dean. There's not part of sam that doesnt hold of a piece of dean inside him.
#like sam wants to be his own person#that doesnt change THIS#if i make any sense#sam's struggle to be seen as a person with his own will & on same footing as dean#doesnt change his need to also BE with dean#he just wanted jt to be equal on both sides#spn#sam winchester#sam&dean#you really cant talk about either of them without mentioning the other and this goes for sam too
